INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month, raising awareness of a rare disease affecting around 100,000 Americans.
Dr. Angeli Rampersad, a pediatric hematologist with Innovative Hematology, joined News 8 along with Grady Wicker, whose family lives with the sickle cell trait and disease.
Rampersad explained the difference between the disease and trait, stating it comes down to the inheritance of hemoglobin. She also explains why so many people might not know they have the trait.
Wicker also weighs in on his family’s experience with sickle cell disease, and what life has been like raising a child with the disease.
