Plain Language Summary:

People with sickle cell disease (SCD) are living longer, which increases the chance of developing other health problems over time. This study of nearly 1,700 people with SCD in Indiana found that asthma was the most common health condition, while complications such as bone damage, stroke, kidney disease, and eye disease became more common with age.

The results show that the risk of health complications increases as people with SCD get older, highlighting the need for ongoing, age-specific care to help improve health outcomes and quality of life.
