Plain Language Summary:

Ligneous conjunctivitis (LC) is a rare eye condition that causes thick, wood-like growths to form on the inside of the eyelids. It is usually caused by plasminogen deficiency type 1 (PLGD-1), a genetic disorder that affects the body’s ability to break down fibrin, a protein involved in blood clotting. The condition can also affect other parts of the body and may lead to serious complications if not diagnosed and treated early.

This review highlights the importance of recognizing LC as a sign of an underlying systemic disorder. Recent advances, including intravenous plasminogen replacement therapy, have improved treatment options and may help prevent vision loss and other complications. Early diagnosis and coordinated care among specialists are essential for achieving the best outcomes.
