Plain Language Summary:

Sickle cell disease (SCD) affects thousands of children in Kenya and many other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, where access to specialized care is often limited. The AMPATH SCD Program was created through a partnership between healthcare organizations in Kenya and the United States to improve access to comprehensive SCD care.

Since 2010, the program has trained more than 5,000 healthcare workers, expanded newborn screening, improved access to medications, supported research, and advocated for better care. The program’s success provides a model that could help improve SCD care in other resource-limited settings.
