Innovative Hematology leads the charge in sickle cell awareness and research

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — World Sickle Cell Day is Thursday, June 19, and it aims to raise awareness about sickle cell disease, which affects over 1,700 people in Indiana.

Sickle cell disease is a rare but serious condition that impacts the hemoglobin molecule, causing blood cells to become misshapen and sticky, leading to various health complications. It is most prevalent in African American, South Asian, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean communities.

Dr. David Hedrick of Innovative Hematology leads the charge in sickle cell awareness and research Hematology explained, “These cells that have these sort of long, pointy ends just get stuck. When they get stuck, that means the tissues that need blood and oxygen…don’t get the nutrients that they need.”

Lena Harvey, known as the face of Sickle Cell Indiana, uses her personal experiences to educate others about the disease. She emphasizes that sickle cell is a lifelong condition that affects daily life, causing chronic fatigue and severe pain.

Dr. Hedrick noted that advances in medicine have allowed people with sickle cell disease to live longer, with some patients now reaching their 50s, 60s, and 70s. However, this longevity presents new challenges in managing the disease as patients age.

Innovative Hematology leads the charge in sickle cell awareness and research. Hematology, based in Indianapolis, is dedicated to researching blood disorders and providing education about sickle cell disease.

The organization works with patients across all stages of life, from infancy to adulthood.

World Sickle Cell Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for awareness and research to improve the lives of those affected by this challenging disease. With continued advocacy and medical advancements, individuals with sickle cell disease can lead fulfilling lives.
