Innovative Hematology, home to the Indiana Hemophilia & Thrombosis Center (IHTC), announces the launch of its Gene Therapy Hub—Indiana’s only comprehensive center providing on-site gene therapy for hemophilia. The Hub offers end-to-end care, including patient evaluation, infusion services, and long-term monitoring, bringing transformative treatment within reach for patients across Indiana and the surrounding region.
Transforming Care Through Gene Therapy
Hemophilia affects approximately 33,000 people in the U.S., with Hemophilia A occurring three to four times more frequently than Hemophilia B. The most common symptoms of hemophilia are bleeding into joints, prolonged bleeding from cuts or injuries, nosebleeds, and bruising. Symptoms vary depending on the severity of the disease.
Hemophilia management often involves frequent, expensive, and time-consuming infusions to replace missing clotting factor. Gene therapy offers a revolutionary approach: a one-time infusion designed to restore clotting factor production and dramatically reduce bleeding episodes. Available gene therapies offer as much as ~90% reduction in annual bleeds.
“Hemophilia gene therapy represents a paradigm shift – moving patients from a lifetime of replacement therapy to an opportunity to live life unencumbered by their bleeding disorder,” says Dr. Amy Shapiro, CEO and cofounder of Innovative Hematology and the IHTC.
